Description: Surtitling course for opera productions which includes a beginner module and another advanced module. Students can choose to only take the second course, or both, according to their experience and abilities. Theoretical and practical sessions will be held, with the attendance of rehearsals for shows at the Auditorio de Tenerife.

Prior skills required: reading sheet music, basic concepts of the lyrical repertoire and basic concepts of the inner workings of opera productions.

Selection criteria: meeting the prior skills required, as judged by the teacher and Auditorio de Tenerife, order of registration.

→ Guaranteeing the correct receipt of materials, reviewing and resolving problems.

→ Preparation of rehearsals and shows.

→ Autonomous operating of surtitling.

→ Resolving technical problems.

→ Note-taking, review and correction of materials.

Content Module 1:

→ The five steps in the surtitling process.

→ Handling language in surtitling.

→ Surtitling operation on sheet music.

Content Module 2:

→ Workflow.

→ Introduction to Spectitular.

→ Advanced Spectitular.

→ Monitoring of rehearsals and live note-taking.

Alejandro Carantoña (Oviedo, 1988) is a translator, director and assistant director of opera staging.  He has provided surtitles for fifty operas and 'zarzuelas' for the Opera of Oviedo, the Teatro de la Maestranza of Seville and the Opera of Tenerife.

He collaborates with the Franco-German company Panthea to develop technical solutions for theatre, especially within the sphere of specific surtitling software. Since 2015, he has taught the surtitling module at the Higher Institute of Linguistic Studies and Translation of Seville/University of Cadiz.

He has assisted conductors such as Susana Gómez, Maxi Rodríguez and Emilio Sagi in theatres like Campoamor (Oviedo), Principal (Palma de Mallorca) and Teatro Real (Madrid). With Emilio Sagi he wrote the book 'Cuestión de oficio' in 2014.

As a stage director and producer, he has created shows for the Noche Blanca (White Night) of Oviedo: Leonard Bernstein at 100 in collaboration with the Opera of OviedoParade Sauvage, a dual programme for the soprano María Hinojosa with the Nuits d’été by Berlioz and the Illuminations by Benjamin Britten performed by the Symphony Orchestra of Asturias (OSPA) directed by Julio César Picos; ‘La noche imaginada’, a symphony programme with the OSPA and shadow theatre by the duo ‘Luz, micro y punto’; Breath, with the OSPA and the world premiere of the work of the same name by Saül Gómez.

He has also staged his own creations of Babar, by Poulenc, and L’histoire du Soldat, by Stravinsky.
