Opera (e)Studio 2019
Ópera de Tenerife set up Opera (e)Studio with the aim of boosting young talent. It is an academy for full artistic improvement with main offices in Auditorio de Tenerife and directed by Giulio Zappa. It generates a fresh European opera company made up of young talents. The programme was developed as an answer to the wish of bridging the academic and the professional worlds. Work is done in a way that allows performers to connect with the professional world and all it involves: their relationship with their bodies on stage, their relationship with their own voice in the theatre and, last but not least, human relationships and working in a micro-world: the opera, a great family made up of singers, pianists, orchestra conductors, orchestras, directors, stagehands, dressmakers, make-up artists, scenographers, etc.
When choosing the artists, the criteria are voice, presence on stage, musical background and artistic personality. Nowadays, in a market that is wider and more competitive than ever, artistic personality is essential for a professional performer. The performers selected at the auditions will get full professional training in all disciplines involved in opera, from musical aspects to staging issues. In addition to musical training, Opera (e)Studio is particularly interested in the acting and body language of singers: the idea to be conveyed is that young artists must be aware of the characteristics and peculiarities of the opera work market at present.
The second part of the project is the production of an opera with real timing, including musical and stage tests, and at the usual pace of a theatre: tests with piano, costume fittings, make-up, and finally, rehearsing with the orchestra.
Ópera de Tenerife hopes that Opera (e)Studio manages to bring the Canary Islands - one of the outermost regions of the European Union, with the limitations and difficulties this implies- closer to Europe and the world. Not only at an artistic level. The stage designs are built in the Canaries (with qualified staff of the Auditorio de Tenerife, Opera (e) Studio’s headquarters). This is a chance to train young Canarian professionals in a highly skilled sector who can then go on to work in other parts of Europe too and widen their professional scope.

In the past few years he has successfully taught accompanying pianists and singers and has been invited by several institutions, including La Scuola dell'Opera del Teatro Comunale de Bolonia, Accademia del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Accademia Verdiana del Teatro Regio de Parma, Teatro Real or Escuela Superior de Canto de Madrid, in Universidad de Jaén, in Opera (E)Studio of The Israeli Opera Tel-Aviv Yafo and the Academy of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.
