The Tenerife Contemporary Music Festival has programmed the premiere of Ecos (Echoes), a work by composer Francis Hernández under commission of the Auditorio de Tenerife.
Ecos is an instrumental suite based on the folklore of the Canary Islands. The work sets forth a rich connection to the archipelago's cultural roots and its diversity, producing a musical journey that encompasses the islands and the traditions of their folklore. Melodies and rhythms are deconstructed and reconstructed in a contemporary setting, sailing the waters that separate academic music, folk and jazz.
In conceptual, poetic and inspirational terms, an echo is a voice from the past that refuses to die out; a whisper from the soul that resounds among mountains, seas and winds. It is the sonic footprint of a sentiment and a truth repeated through the ages that draws invisible waves that reach the heart, although the source from which they came has long since disappeared. Like a reflection of silence, an echo is the memory of sound, the persistence of the ephemeral and a bridge between the distant and the present
The suite was composed for the artisanal transversal flute known as ‘pito herreño’, steel drum, percussion ensemble and jazz trio. It is comprised of eight movements, each associated with one of the archipelago's eight islands.
