La traviata is an opera in three acts with music by Giuseppe Verdi and libretto in Italian by Francesco Maria Piave. It is based on a theatrical adaptation of the novel by Alexandre Dumas (Jr.) The Lady of the Camellias (1852). It was premiered at La Fenice in Venice on 6 March 1853.

The first performances of La traviata caused a major scandal because of the personality of the heroine, an icon of female freedom, and the intimate character Verdi brings to it. Violetta Valéry is a courtesan who falls in love with a nobleman, Alberto, but his father, Germont, interferes in their relationship and it is too late when he eventually redeems the lovers. As in all 19th century great stories, the fate of the heroine, a character in constant evolution and full of nuances, is unavoidably tragic.
