The company Hotel Europa is to perform Portugal no es un país pequeño (Portugal is not a small country) in Portuguese with captions in Spanish and English. The show, to take place in the La Salita hall of the Auditorio de Tenerife, is about European dictatorships and the presence of Europe in Africa. Portugal no es un país pequeño focusses on Portugal, which holds the dubious honours of having endured 48 years of fascist rule-the longest such dictatorship in Europe-and maintaining a colonial empire that stood for nearly 500 years. These facts underlie the show's testimonies of former Portuguese colonists who were among the exodus of African refugees between 1974 and 1976. The show is meant to shed light on factual accounts that have become memories that have been handed from one generation to another. It explores the circumstances in which real people have contributed to the scrutiny and reconstruction of cultural identities. It is a reflection on how theatre may help to rewrite history by providing a silenced group with a voice, promoting the transmission of memories across generations. In addition, the company Hotel Europa has been granted an artist residency in the Auditorio de Tenerife for its project Terra do fogo from 7 to 11 April.
