Giuseppe Verdi
Ópera de Tenerife presents its second title of the 2022-2023 season: Un ballo in maschera (A Masked Ball), by Giuseppe Verdi.
Un ballo in maschera, premièred at the Teatro Apollo in Rome in 1859, is perhaps one of the Italian genius's most well-rounded and beautiful operas. The staging of this co-production between the Auditorio de Tenerife and the Teatro Regio di Parma distances itself from the traditional stereotypes of this title, but it keeps the spirit of the original work.
The plot in three acts narrates the assassination in 1792 of King Gustav of Sweden, an illustrated despot who was enemies with the nobility due to his reforms, at the hands of a gentleman from the court. The story has many of the public’s favourite ingredients: forbidden love, terrifying places, acts of revenge, violent deaths and dark and marginal characters such as the witch Ulrica.
