Samuel Mariño

MALE SOPRANO

Samuel Mariño's innate musicality and unique vocal talent have prepared him for a career that allows him to explore various operatic roles within a repertoire of Baroque and classical works.

Samuel began training as a ballet dancer at the Venezuelan National School of Dance but then started his studies in piano and voice at the National Conservatory of Music. His first operatic experiences were with Camerata Barroca in Caracas, where he worked with Gustavo Dudamel, Helmuth Rilling and Theodore Kuchar. These collaborations spurred his passion for Baroque repertoire and inspired him to continue his studies at the Conservatory of Paris.

His concert debuts in Australia with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra conducted by Paul Dyer, in Canada with Tafelmusik and in the USA with Camerata Pacífica were among the most outstanding moments of the 2022-23 season. He will also make his UK debut at the Glyndebourne Festival as Iris (Semele).

Samuel Mariño debuted at the 2018 Handel Festival in Halle as Alessandro in Handel's Berenice, a performance for which he was nominated for the Best New Artist award by Das OpernWelt. Subsequent portrayals include Demetrio in Gluck's Angigono with the Halle Handel Festival Orchestra conducted by Michael Hofstetter at the Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth, Tamiri in Angesi's Il Re Pastore with the Katowice Academy Baroque Orchestra, Curiazio in Cimarosa's Gli Orazi e i Curiazi for the Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg, and the theatrical performances of Handel's La Resurrezione at the Stadttheater Giessen conducted by Michael Hofstetter.

His concerts include Bach's Mass in B minor with the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra and the Choir conducted by Zsolt Hamar, as well as gala concerts in Halle with arias from Chuerubino (Le nozze di Figaro), Fiorilla (Il turco in Italia) and Maria (West Side Story). He appeared onstage with Rolando Villazón at the Palais Garnier opera house in the season finale of the Rolex Perpetual Music concert series. His growing discography includes Pergolesi's Stabat Mater with the Orchestre de l'Opéra Royal, released on the Versailles Spectacles label, and his solo debut on Care pupille, an album containing rarities of Handel and Gluck with the Halle Handel Festival Orchestra, nominated for three Opus Klassik awards in 2021.

Samuel Mariño was awarded in the category of interpretation at the 2017 Concours International de Chant de Marseille competition and won the audience award at the 2017 Neue Stimmen international singing competition. At present, he is studying under the renowned soprano Barbara Bonney and is the recipient of a scholarship from the Rotary Club of Salzburg. Following his passion for rediscovering music and innovating period performance practice, Samuel founded Ensemble Teseo in 2019, in which he aims to bring forgotten Baroque techniques and works to mainstream operatic and concert stages.
