This week Sinfónica de Tenerife, under the baton of Víctor Pablo Pérez, is performing one of the most beautiful requiem masses in the history of western music, Mozart’s Requiem, in three different venues in Güímar, Santa Cruz and La Laguna. The orchestra will be joined by soprano Alicia Amo, mezzo Anabel Aldalur, tenor Agustín Prunell-Friend, baritone David Wilson-Johnson and Ensamble Vocal de Tenerife, directed by Antonio Abreu Lechado.

“Mozart’s Requiem –the orchestra’s honorary conductor points out – is built around mystery from the very start. There have been many reconstructions in an attempt to find out Mozart’s real intentions. The last one was by Pierre-Henri Dutron, on René Jacobs’s request. Sinfónica de Tenerife is offering the one by Süssmayr with some modifications”.

The first concert will be at 8:30 pm on Thursday, the 4th at San Pedro Apóstol Church in Güímar, where the orchestra is performing the Requiem for choir, soloists and orchestra by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791). This will be repeated at 8:00 pm on Saturday, the 6th at La Laguna Cathedral. The audience will enjoy the “contrast and mystery” in this score. In Víctor Pablo Pérez’s opinion, “tears, sighs, prayers or liberation follow one another until we reach Lux Aeterna, which is like a rainbow reflecting the colours of Peace”.

With these concerts, Sinfónica de Tenerife reinforces their commitment to society by taking their work to other venues on the island, in agreement with the Cabildo’s Tenerife 2030 initiative. These two concerts are free of charge and their aim is to generate a relationship between audiences and musicians through experiencing music live.

In their performance at Sala Sinfónica in Auditorio de Tenerife, at 7:30 pm on Friday, the 5th, the orchestra will be playing a programme starting with Symphony nº 49 in F minor “La passione” by Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) and ending with Requiem by Mozart. “The idea is to bring together human and divine feelings through the Baroque and the classical styles” Pérez explains.

While Mozart’s popular work is steeped in mystery, Haydn’s symphony complements this programme by “showing ‘human passion’ connected to the feelings associated with the week of the Passion. Deep, melancholy, melodies, sighs and laments follow one another throughout this amazing symphony”, the honorary conductor concludes.

Tickets for the concert are available at Auditorio de Tenerife box office, from 10:00 am to 7:30 pm Monday to Saturday; on the phone, calling 902 317 327; or on the internet www.sinfonicadetenerife.es  y www.auditoriodetenerife.com.

This performance is part of the Choir Spring Series of Sinfónica de Tenerife’s current season, which continues with two concerts conducted by Antonio Méndez: the first one is on Friday, 10th May with a programme that includes the Female Choir of Conservatorio Profesional de Tenerife, and ends on 21st June with Brahms’s German Requiem, with the participation of the ORCAM choir and the Gulbekian choir.
