The Musical.IES Project is premiering at 7:00 pm on Sunday, the 7th their new show Ítaca at Sala Sinfónica in Auditorio de Tenerife.  This musical, in which 160 secondary school students from nine schools on the island are taking part, will transport the audience to 1990s New York, in a sitcom atmosphere where crowded scenes are combined with more intimate ones. This week, President of Cabildo, Carlos Alonso, attended one of the rehearsals with the Island Director for Culture, José Luis Rivero.

The President of the Cabildo admits he is very fond of this project “which is one of the diamonds in the crown of Tenerife 2030, that will be heart forever”. “Creativity, innovation, languages… Musical.IES amply fulfils the values and objectives of the Tenerife 2030 strategy”, he highlighted and thanked the artistic team of the musical, and especially the participants and parents. “It’s very exciting to see them every year”, he said.

The musical is set in the bustling unstoppable 1990s New York. In Sullivan Street, there is a small corner to put your feet up, take a deep breath and let your heart rest. Ítaca is a small bar, full of memories and of lives lived to the full. If the viewer decides to pay them a visit, they will meet all the regulars and will embark on an adventure called life. Ítaca invites the audience to take a seat, make themselves comfortable, they’ll be served soon.

Actually, a comfy sofa is one of the main elements in this production, directed by Melodie Pérez. Other members of the pedagogic team include Alejandro de la Barreda, Elena Feria, Mirela Fregolent, Daniel Morales, Ubaldo Pérez and Roxana Schmunk. Apart from the family performance, there will be two school performances on Monday, the 8th, at 10:00 am and 11:45 am for over 3,000 students from some thirty schools on the island.

Like every year, the theme is chosen with the students participating who reach an agreement that is then developed by the creative team of the project. Rehearsals start at the beginning of the year in the schools in combination with Saturday sessions. A few weeks before the premiere, they get together and outline the scenes and songs which are known to the general public.

The education centres taking part in the project are:  I.E.S Alcalde Bernabé, I.E.S Teobaldo Power, I.E.S San Benito, I.E.S Los Realejos, I.E.S María Pérez Trujillo, I.E.S. Punta Larga, I.E.S Los Cristianos, C.E.O Leoncio Rodríguez and C.I.F.P César Manrique.
