Next week Sinfónica de Tenerife pays a tribute to composer Manuel de Falla with the performance of one of the landmarks in the national repertoire, The Three-cornered Hat, to commemorate his one hundredth anniversary. The programme, focused on music inspired by Spain, combines contemporary Marcos Fernández-Barrero with early 20th century Debussy and Spanish composer Falla. The concert is at 7:30 pm on Friday, 10 May at Auditorio de Tenerife Adán Martín’s Sala Sinfónica under the baton of Antonio Méndez and the participation of Conservatorio Profesional de Tenerife’s Women’s choir, led by Juan Ramón Vinagre, winners of the XLVIII Certamen Coral de Ejea. [Ejea Choral Competition]

The orchestra’s principal conductor presents the premiere in the Canaries of Nocturno Sinfónico, by Marcos Fernández-Barrero (Barcelona, 1984), commissioned by Fundación SGAE and the Asociación Española de Orquestas Sinfónicas (AEOS). Inspired by the world of dreams the composer describes this piece as “a sonorous visit to those characters who people our dreams and then disappear in the morning”.

French composer Claude Debussy (1862-1918) has a significant presence in the current Sinfónica de Tenerife season, as one of its main features is the series dedicated to his work. His piece Nocturnes, a musical vision in which Debussy “depicts an atmospheric nighttime” inspired by Henri de Régnier’s symbolist poems. The piece will be interpreted by Sinfónica de Tenerife and the Women’s Choir of Conservatorio Profesional de Tenerife, directed by Juan Ramón Vinagre. As winners of the 48th Ejea Choral Competition last April, the choir will represent this renowned contest in the next National Grand Prix for Choral Singing to be held in 2020.

Dreams are also the inspiration in the next piece to be performed by the Cabildo’s orchestra. It is a dream about Spain, which was not included in the history of music until the 19th century. Debussy, interested in the music of this part of the world, reached the Spanish repertoire via Falla and Albéniz and their stay in Paris. Iberia is made up of three movements that try to depict everyday life, offering a portrait of our country’s popular culture that is closer to his imagination than to specific references.

The orchestral suites The Three-cornered Hat closes the event in which Sinfónica de Tenerife commemorates the one hundredth anniversary of one of the milestones in the Spanish repertoire. The work is based in the play by writer Pedro Antonio Alarcón, which Manuel de Falla (1876-1946) wrote as a ballet, with the collaboration of Diaghilev (as choreographer and playwright) and Picasso (as stage and costume designer). It was premiered at London’s Alhambra Theatre in 1919. In this piece Falla depicts the characters and settings with fandangos, farrucas, magical nocturnes, jotas navarras, an example of his talent to raise Spanish popular music to academicism.
