Artist Estrella Morente is giving a concert at 8:00 pm on Sunday, the 19th at Sala Sinfónica in Auditorio de Tenerife, part of Festival Mar Abierto. The Spanish flamenco cantaora is presenting her new record on the island, which was released in February and is entitled Copla.

In her new project, the artist shows her personal characteristic style by mixing old influences from her native Granada with the latest flamenco trends of the new millennium. This new record consists of 12 songs, including the single Soledad, which she presented in collaboration with maestro Isidro Muñoz.

Being the daughter of maestro Enrique Morente and bailaora Aurora Carbonell, marked the flamenco atmosphere in which she grew up and matured as a person and as an artist. Aged 7, she sang with guitarist maestro Sabicas and at 16 she made her world debut at the presentation Gala of the Skiing Competition in Sierra Nevada (Granada).

After launching her first work, the best theatres and events in Spain welcomed Morente. These great events include the XII Bienal de Flamenco at Auditorio de la Cartuja, the Festival Internacional del Cante de Las Minas, Sonidos del Mundo, Festival La mar de Músicas in Cartagena and the show Estrella 1992. She has received countless prizes including an Ondas award for best flamenco creation; was nominated to the Latin Grammy and won two Premios Amigo

After taking part in the shooting of the film Morente sueña la Alhambra, a documentary directed by José Sánchez Montes, Pedro Almodóvar chose her for his film Volver where Estrella lends her voice to Penélope Cruz in the main theme of the soundtrack. In May 2006, after five years without publishing a record, Mujeres came out, a collection of themes inspired by female characters who are close to Estrella’s heart. The tour that followed took her to the main cities in Spain, including Madrid, Barcelona, Jerez, Valencia and Málaga. She also took this record to Broadway, New York and Festival Fiesta des Suds in Marseilles, Rome and Sardinia.

Nominated for the Latin Grammy and winner of the Premio de la Música 2006 for best flamenco album, Estrella took active part in the campaign for the reform of Andalusia Statute of Autonomy. She was also distinguished with the Micrófono de Oro award, granted by the Spanish Federation of Radio and Televison Associations in recognition of her work. In early 2008 she was awarded the Premio al Mejor Espectáculo en Directo [Best Live Show], after an international poll made by the digital newspaper deflamenco.com; she also got an award at the 9th “Flamenco Hoy” for best flamenco DVD for Casacueva and Escenario.

In 2011 Estrella showed her art in Austria, Belgium, Holland and Switzerland. The year ended with her performing in Istanbul for the first time. In 2013 her career took her to Rome, Paris and London to present Autorretrato [Self-portrait]. 

In 2014 she travelled to Brussels, Amsterdam, Zurich, Vienna, Uppsala, Dortmund, Eindhoven, American cities like Miami, New York, Chicago, Toronto, Cleveland, Sonoma, Washington, Savannah or Los Angeles, Buenos Aires, and Oman where Estrella continued her tour. In 2016 her compilation record '15 años con Estrella' came out. In it she goes through her music career and her record with Javier Perianes Encuentro with works by Falla and Lorca. At present, Estrella combines her professional engagements with her close collaboration with the NGOs Bancos de Alimentos, Médicos Sin Fronteras and Intermón Oxfam.
