International Singing Competition
The Concurso Internacional de Canto Ópera de Tenerife is held every season between June and July at the Auditorio de Tenerife. The International Singing Competition is upheld by the collaboration of an international jury of recognised artistic and technical ability, who are experienced in this type of competitions. One of the main goals is for participating artists to have the opportunity of showing their talent, and the quality and excellence of their work. An effective bridge towards a more successful and artistically higher professional development.
The candidates must prepare five arias of their choice from the opera repertoire. In addition, to compete for the Premio María Orán candidates can prepare two arias of the zarzuela repertoire. Throughout the phases of the competition applicants will be accompanied by the piano of a collaborating maestro picked by Ópera de Tenerife. The call is open to the following types of voices: soprano, mezzo soprano, contralto, counter-tenor, tenor, baritone, bass-baritone or bass.
The competition has three phases:
- Qualifying round: The artists will sing two opera arias. The first aria will be chosen by the candidate and the second one by the jury. Also, candidates wishing to enter for the “María Orán” award will sing a zarzuela aria of their choice.
- Semifinal: The semi-finalists will sing an opera aria, chosen by the jury from those they have not sung in the qualifying round, except for those cases where the jury asks for a second aria. Also, candidates competing for the “María Orán” award will sing a zarzuela aria they have not sung in the qualifying round. (Candidates who access the semifinal phase directly will sing 2 opera arias, one chosen by the candidate and another one picked by the jury. If they wish to compete for the “María Orán” award, they will also sing a zarzuela aria of their choice.)
- Final: The finalists will sing an opera aria chosen by the jury and if they wish to compete for the Premio María Orán, a zarzuela aria, also chosen by the jury.
The competition ends with the traditional Award-winners Concert which closes the Ópera de Tenerife season at Auditorio de Tenerife’s Sala de Cámara.
The awards granted at the competition are divided in three cash-prizes, the Premio María Orán de Zarzuela [Zarzuela Award], in honour of the Tenerife soprano, and a jury’s prize. There are also special awards granted by the jury which consist of contracts in their own opera season productions.
