Baritone José Antonio López and pianist Rubén Fernández Aguirre will perform this poetic-musical recital on Tuesday.

The Auditorio de Tenerife offers this Tuesday (18 March), at 7.30 p.m. the concert Winterreise (Winter Journey), a song cycle by Franz Schubert, consisting of 24 lieder, each a masterful blend of poetry and music emblematic of the Romantic era. The recital will feature baritone José Antonio López and pianist Rubén Fernández Aguirre.

The 24 lieder that comprise this work by the Austrian composer are based on poems by the German poet Wilhelm Müller. During the approximately 75-minute performance, the texts will be projected as they are interpreted. Winterreise is one of Schubert’s final compositions, characterised by a dramatic tone.

Baritone José Antonio López is a versatile singer who navigates amidst styles and eras ranging from the Baroque to contemporary music, dividing his artistic efforts between concerts, the opera, and recitals. He is always paying attention to the style and expressiveness of each period and the use of his voice at the service of music. He is also a dedicated performer of the lied, having been accompanied by Maurizio Pollini at the Theater an der Wien, by Daniel Heide, Iain Burnside and Rubén Fernández Aguirre, as on this occasion.

In the concert arena, his recent debut at the LA Phil with Gustavo Dudamel, as well as his engagements with other orchestras, such as the Cincinnati Symphony, the Rotterdam Philharmonic, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Dresdner Festspieleorchester, the Antwerp Symphony, the BBC Symphony and Philharmonic and the Warsaw Philharmonic, attest to his greatness.

Recent years have seen a significant increase in this artist’s classical singing work, with a strong presence of Handel’s operas and contemporary music, as well as featuring Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, Wagner and Strauss., among others. López has recorded for the labels Deutsche Gramophon, Harmonia Mundi, Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, Naxos and Chandos.

Rubén Fernández Aguirre, born in Vizcaya, was a pupil of Félix Lavilla and specialised in accompanying singers in Vienna and Munich, receiving guidance from Wolfram Rieger. He is a regular pianist for singers such as Carlos Álvarez, Lisette Oropesa, Ismael Jordi, Sabina Puértolas, Javier Camarena, Carmen Solís, David Alegret, Marina Monzó, Jose Antonio López, Serena Sáenz, Airam Hernández, Ruth Iniesta, Joan Martín-Royo, Vanessa Goikoetxea, Nancy Fabiola Herrera, Miren Urbieta, Núria Rial, Berna Perles, and he also does recitals with Ermonela Jaho, Carlos Chausson, Mariella Devia, José Bros, Measha Brüggergosman, Andreas Schager, Martina Serafin, Celso Albelo, Cristina Gallardo-Domâs, Simón Orfila, Sylvia Schwarz, Christopher Robertson, Ainhoa Arteta, Martin Nusspaumer, María Bayo, Borja Quiza, María José Montiel, José Luis Sola, Maite Beaumont, David Menéndez, Isabel Rey, Gabriel Bermúdez, Virginia Tola, José Sempere, Ángeles Blancas, Pancho Corujo and Leontina Vaduva, among many others. He performs at most Spanish and international theatres and festivals.

A defender of Musical Heritage, he has helped to recover the five operas for small venues by Sevillian composer Manuel García. Among his notable discography are Granados Songs Integral, Carlos Álvarez Live in La Monnaie, and Canciones en la Alhambra. An Honorary Patron of the Victoria de los Ángeles Foundation, in 2010 he received the Ópera Actual award ‘for his dedication to classical singing and the growing prestige he is achieving in his field’.

This marks the first introduction of lieder to the Auditorio de Tenerife’s programming, which will continue into the next season and aligns with the work being done in the Ópera de Tenerife season.
