Schumann composed his Second Symphony after his nervous breakdown that led to a depression which would eventually made him attempt to take his own life. This dejection, which prevented him from premiering his Violin Concerto (Joachim even thought it was a figment of his madness). Music which is both a testimonial and a triumph. The programme is completed with the Overture of Genoveva, the composer’s only opera.
