The Tenerife-born singer and the pianist Chiky Martín will bring Spanish songs to Adeje, El Sauzal and the Auditorio de Tenerife

This year’s programming of Ópera de Tenerife has scheduled a recital of Tenerife-born soprano Raquel Lojendio at three of the island’s venues. The recital for voice and piano, titled De España vengo, is to be performed on Thursday, 10 April at Adeje Auditorium at 8 p.m., on Friday, 11 April at El Sauzal Theatre at 7.30 p.m. and on Saturday, 12 April at 7.30 p.m. in the Chamber Hall of the Auditorio de Tenerife.

Pianist Chiky Martín is to accompany Lojendio in this selection of works of traditional, theatrical singing from the genre known as ‘Canción Española’. The programme includes interpretations of La Maja dolorosa by Enric Granados, Agua me daban a mí by Antón García Abril, La del manojo de rosas by Pablo Sorozábal and La petenera by Moreno Torroba, among many more pieces.

With this selection, De España vengo is intended to give spectators a broad sampling of the creations in this style of some Spain’s most important composers from the late-19th to the mid-20th centuries.

The genre was extremely popular in the 19th century, although it was perceived as being less prestigious than classical music and more sophisticated than popular music. The influence of German music and Romanticism revitalised the genre, putting it on a standing with German lied and French mélodie art songs, respectively.

Soprano Raquel Lojendio is among the most relevant singers at this time. Her versatility allows her to take on a varied repertoire of styles ranging from oratorio and lied to zarzuela and opera. She has performed as a guest artist with many of the most important orchestras in Spain and abroad, she has worked with acclaimed conductors and she has recorded for Deutsche Grammophon, Chandos and IBS Classical.

Lojendio received instruction in classic ballet and studied at the Higher Conservatory of Music in her hometown Santa Cruz de Tenerife and at the Higher Conservatory of Music of Liceu in Barcelona with Carmen Bustamante. She has also taken part in masterclasses with María Orán and Krisztina Laki.

Madrid native Chiky Martín studied piano at the Madrid Royal Conservatory with María Teresa Fuster and Pedro Lerma, obtaining the ‘Premio Extraordinario Fin de Carrera’ award upon graduation. She worked with Rosa Sabater, María Curccio, Christopher Elton and Josep Colom in several courses on interpretation and chamber music, although she received her most important instruction in chamber music through Félix Lavilla.

In collaboration with prestigious artists, such as Teresa Berganza, María Orán, Marcial Cervera, Aurora Nátola-Ginastera, María José Montiel and Asier Polo, and among others, Chiky Martín has performed a great number of recitals and concerts.

Tickets for this week’s performances of De España vengo are available at each venue’s point of ticket sales and at www.auditoriodetenerife.com, where you can get further information on the complete programme.
