Enchanting cantaora Estrella Morente comes to “Mar Abierto” for the first time, in her return to Gran Canaria and Tenerife where she last sang in 2012. Being the daughter of maestro Enrique Morente and bailaora Aurora Carbonell, marked the flamenco atmosphere in which she grew up and matured as a person and as an artist. Aged 7, she sang with guitarist maestro Sabicas and at 16 she made her world debut at the presentation Gala of the Skiing Competition in Sierra Nevada (Granada). After launching her first work, the best theatres and events in Spain welcomed Morente. Some of the most outstanding venues and events she has performed at include the closing of XII Bienal de Flamenco at Auditorio de la Cartuja, the Festival Internacional del Cante de Las Minas, Sonidos del Mundo, Festival La mar de Músicas in Cartagena and the show Estrella 1992. She has received countless prizes including an Ondas award for best flamenco creation; has been nominated to the Latin Grammy and has won two Premios Amigo.

After taking part in the shooting of the film 'Morente sueña la Alhambra', a documentary directed by José Sánchez Montes, Pedro Almodóvar chose her for his film 'Volver' where Estrella lends her voice to Penélope Cruz in the main theme of the soundtrack. In May 2006, after five years without publishing a record, 'Mujeres' came out, a collection of themes inspired by female characters who are close to Estrella’s heart. The tour that followed took her to the main cities in Spain, including Madrid, Barcelona, Jerez, Valencia and Málaga. She also took this record to Broadway, New York and Festival Fiesta des Suds in Marseilles, Rome and Sardinia.

Nominated for the Latin Grammy and winner of the Premio de la Música 2006 for best flamenco album, Estrella took active part in the campaign for the reform of Andalusia Statute of Autonomy. She was also distinguished with the Micrófono de Oro award, granted by the Spanish Federation of Radio and Televison Associations in recognition of her work. In early 2008 she was awarded the Premio al Mejor Espectáculo en Directo [Best Live Show], after an international poll made by the digital newspaper deflamenco.com; she also received an award at the 9th “Flamenco Hoy” for best flamenco DVD for “Casacueva and Escenario”.

In 2011 Estrella displayed her art in Austria, Belgium, Holland and Switzerland. She closed the Festival de Arles with a broadcast concert and took part in some flamenco sessions in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The International Festival in her native Granada presented her at Palacio Carlos V, in a recital dedicated to the memory of Enrique Morente. That year ended with her performing in Istanbul for the first time. In 2013 her career took her to Rome, Paris and London to present her “Autorretrato” [Self-portrait], and to Marseilles to open the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations (Mucem) with the Palestinian trio The Khoury Project.

In 2014 she travelled to Brussels, Amsterdam, Zurich, Vienna, Uppsala, Dortmund, Eindhoven, American cities like Miami, New York, Chicago, Toronto, Cleveland, Sonoma, Washington, Savannah or Los Angeles, Buenos Aires, and Oman where Estrella continued her tour. In 2016 Estrella played Lysistrata in 'La guerra de las mujeres', at the Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico de Mérida. That year her compilation record '15 años con Estrella' came out. In it she goes through her music career and her record with Javier Perianes 'Encuentro' with works by Falla and Lorca. At present, Estrella combines her professional engagements with her close collaboration with the NGOs Bancos de Alimentos, Médicos Sin Fronteras and Intermón Oxfam.
