The Auditorio de Tenerife’s theatre programme presents two performances of this play, starring Elisabet Gelabert

This weekend, La Salita is scheduling Lady Anne, based on Shakespeare’s Richard III, directed by Inma Nieto and performed by herself and Elisabet Gelabert. The two performances take place on Saturday (22 February) and Sunday (23 February) at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for both performances can be purchased at a single price of €8 and €5 for the audience under 30. Following Saturday’s performance, the Canarian actress Idaira Santana will moderate a talk with the company.

The play begins when an actress, portrayed by Elisabet Gelabert and her director, Inma Nieto, prepares for rehearsals. Both of them approach that day in a scene written by Shakespeare in Richard III in which, with her husband’s body still present, Lady Anne is dragged into a spiral of seduction by Richard – guilty of the murder – where he holds all the weapons apart from one: the power of belief in the other.

In collaboration with Teatro de la Abadía, the show mixes the world of rehearsal and what has been rehearsed to discuss actresses and directors, men and women, realities and fiction. Lady Anne is a journey into the past, reflecting on revenge, power, and the role of women in theatre.

According to the director of this play, Inma Nieto, they start from a scene in Richard III that is “masterfully written”. As the author of the text, who is also the playwright, she imagines the actual preparation moment for the Shakespearean scene, when young men played the female roles. Inma Nieto reflects that “the ban on women appearing on stage was simply a reflection on the role of women in Elizabethan society. And now, I have changed the pieces; I put Anne Neville and the actress playing her in the middle of the chessboard…I give them the chance to turn the action around”, Nieto reveals.

Elisabet Gelabert and Inma Nieto are actresses from the first graduation years of La Abadía Centre of Studies who joined the cast of Entremeses in 1996, directed by José Luis Gómez and Rosario Ruiz Rodgers. Now, they are presenting a stage show as creators under the name Las Hijas de Eva (Eva’s daughters), using Shakespeare’s Richard III as a dramatic catalyst to discuss the profession, the creative process of an actress, and the relationship with the stage director.

La Salita’s programme continues on 21, 22 and 23 March with the play “La Celestina: Tragicomedia de Lita,” a free adaptation of Fernando de Rojas’ classic, directed by David Piccotto and starring actress and clown Julieta Daga.
