The Jazz Programm of the Auditorio de Tenerife presents the concert An East African Journey, el viaje musical de Omar Sosa, played by the Omar Sosa Trio.

Cuban pianist and composer Omar Sosa presents his new album called ‘An East African Journey’ (February 2021), conceived in collaboration with traditional musicians from that region of the planet. As a result, thirteen songs showcase the musical richness of what he considers "Mother Africa".

Omar Sosa was born in Camagüey (Cuba), where he learned from a very young age to play percussion instruments and the piano. Although he was born in Cuba, his exploratory spirit has taken him to the ends of the world and especially to Africa, the root of many of the musical traditions of the Caribbean.

This time his attention was focused on the countries of East Africa, where the Cuban pianist and composer discovered other sounds, other ways of making music, other timbres. The result of these efforts was reflected in ‘An East African Journey’, his most recent musical masterpiece made up of thirteen songs in the form of duets with local interpreters.

This is an exquisite compilation of recordings by Omar Sosa featuring collaborative work with seven musicians from East Africa and mixing traditional songs with jazz in a contemporary production. The folk music base that makes up this project was recorded by Omar Sosa himself during a tour of East Africa and includes material from Madagascar, Kenya, Sudan, Ethiopia, Burundi, Zambia, and the Republic of Mauritius. Jazz elements include Omar Sosa on piano, Steve Argüelles playing the drums and percussion, and Christophe “Disco” Minck on double bass, synthesisers, and effects. These recordings allow the musical wealth of East Africa to be brought to a wider audience. Among traditional instruments they play we find Valiha, Lokanga, Marovany, Kalumbu, Krar, Umuduri, Nyatiti, and Ravanne.
