A one-act opera, composed by Alexander von Zemlinsky, inspired by the short story The birthday of the infanta by Oscar Wilde. It is the most emblematic work by the Austrian composer.
Doña Clara, the infanta of Spain, is celebrating her eighteenth birthday and among the multitude of gifts she receives, she is surprised by the appearance of a dwarf – physically unattractive – who delights the hostess with his dances and songs.
