The Auditorio de Tenerife is scheduling La ciudad de los otros (The City of Others), a show by the Colombian dance company Sankofa Danzafro.

The city is inhabited by people of different origins and different cultures, with different ways of understanding the world. Thousands of people coexist in a clearly defined environment, yet each has their perspective of a shared reality. Sometimes, far from being a source of progress, the city becomes a place of hostility, loneliness, and discrimination.

For life in the metropolis to be understood as space for collective construction, it is necessary to understand the concept of extended family that prevails in rural communities: what I own belongs to everyone, under the roof that covers me there is room for someone else. If you need me, I am here, I am not the exclusive owner of my surroundings.

La Ciudad de los otros (The City of Others) lays bare the lack of opportunities for human beings, who for generations have been marked by ethnic discrimination and social inequality. Black communities and other marginalised groups, always viewed through the same lens, reclaim political power that results in genuine forms of coexistence; to ensure that La Ciudad de los Otros (The City of Others) is a city for everyone.

This work was created in 2010 as part of the commemoration of the slavery abolition in Colombia, thanks to the Mayor's Office of Medellín and the House of Afro-Colombian Integration.
