Pictures at an exhibition
Pictures of an Exhibition is a family concert offered by the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra suitable for children over nine years of age.
Mussorgsky composed this piece, originally for piano, after viewing the exhibition of paintings by architect Victor Hartmann, who had recently died. He wanted to translate into music some of the pictorial pieces that he liked the most, doing so as a posthumous tribute to his friend. In addition, he created a theme that he called Promenade: a passage that marks the route, the path between one painting and another, just as it exists in an exhibition.
