The eventful journey to nowhere made by some picturesque characters to join the festivities that celebrate the crowning of King Carlos X in Reims, inspires Rossini to write his last opera buffa in Italian. After its premiere in 1825, critics hailed it as one of his best compositions.

The meeting of an outlandish group of aristocrats and officials at the luxurious spa Il Giglio d’Oro displays a series of arias and pieces of unquestionable quality and originality, including the fourteen-voice concertante at the critical point of the plot.
