Public company Auditorio de Tenerife has received funding from the European Commission programme Creative Europe, whose aim is to give support to cultural and film sectors on the continent. This aid goes to the Opera (e)Studio Project, the international learning academy which is part of the Ópera de Tenerife season.

The European Commission chose the proposal presented by Tenerife out of 493 which also entered. Ópera de Tenerife had access to this call through the production The Elixir of Love, by Donizetti, which is part of the Opera (e)Studio scheme to be performed at Auditorio de Tenerife in October 2019. The Auditorio is leading this transnational project in association with Teatro Communale in Bologna and Tbilisi Opera and Ballet State Theatre in Georgia.

The island director for Culture and Education of Cabildo de Tenerife, José Luis Rivero, has expressed his satisfaction on the result, which was achieved “after a complex process”, and highlighted the proposal got a high score from the members who took the decision who “granted us 200,000 Euros, which is the maximum amount we could obtain”.

In Rivero’s view, “granting this aid to a finance cultural projects, points out the quality of the work done at Ópera de Tenerife”. “The Auditorio has already been acknowledged as the main artistic production centre in the Canary Islands and this funding now places it as a leading institution in the European scene, as it has become a great training centre offering a learning process to young performers”.

This joint venture with Bologna and Tbilisi means auditions to choose the candidates are carried out in the three cities. Once the singers are chosen, they will face The Elixir of Love and come to the Island in September to start intensive learning sessions for two months that would lead to four performances of Donizetti’s opera. The production will then travel to Bologna in May 2020 and on to Tbilisi in the summer.
