The Mexican company Los Colochos arrives at La Salita with the recently premiered ‘Tuta‘
The Auditorio de Tenerife will be the second venue for this new creation, the fifth of the plays based on texts by Shakespeare
The new theatrical performance hall La Salita of the Auditorio de Tenerife is the second stop for Tuta, the Mexican theatrical troupe Los Colochos's latest show based on William Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus. The work premiered last week at Seville's Central Theatre. Show times in Tenerife are this Friday (29 November) at 7.30 p.m. and Saturday (30 November) at noon and 7.30 p.m., although both evening shows have been sold out and the only remaining tickets are for the Saturday performance at midday.
Tuta is the fifth work of Shakespeare that the troupe has adapted and given a Mexican twist. Thus, after Mendoza (Macbeth), Nacahue (Romeo and Juliet), Silencio (Othello) and Reina (King Lear), Tuta, based on Titus Andronicus, tells the violent story of ancient Rome in the setting of Mexican prisons.
The play will be performed by Mario Eduardo de León, Ana Carolina Politi, Marco Antonio Vidal, Erandeni Durán, Leonardo Zamudio, Roam León, Claudia Yadira Pérez, María Fernanda Aguiar and the local actors Horacio Colomé and Nuhr Jojo.
The performance in La Salita has been staged in a rather unusual way, as two casts simultaneously interpret the roles of male and female inmates in their respective prison wings. Both casts shall perform at the same time, interpreting the same texts simultaneously.
The story shall be told over the course of two and a half hours, with events happening in two wings of prison among inmates, prison staff and even real dogs. The main characters Tuta, Chuy and René will follow through with their decisions to their ultimate consequences.
Alfonso Cárcamo and Juan Carrillo created and wrote Tuta and shall direct the performances. The work is a production of Los Colochos Teatro and Carlota Guivernau with the collaboration of Metropolitana Gestao Cultural and Iberescena.
Los Colochos was formed in August 2010 as a troupe focussed on domestic, high-quality, societally critical theatrical productions. The group has performed in 15 Mexican states at important national festivals and during extended periods in Mexico City. Performing abroad, Los Colochos have taken part in important festivals and undertaken tours in Spain, Germany, Colombia, Cuba, Peru, Costa Rica, the United Kingdom, Ecuador, Portugal, the United States, the Dominican Republic and Brazil.
In 2014, their project Mendoza, based on Shakespeare's Macbeth, was awarded top honours at the fourth competition of the "Almagro Off" international festival in Almagro, Spain. At that same festival, as part of the official programme for 2017, the troupe premiered Nacahue: Ramón y Hortensia, which is based on Romeo and Juliet. In 2022, as part of a Shakespearian pentalogy, the troupe premiered the works Silencio and Reina, which were inspired by Othello and King Lear, respectively. On this occasion in 2024, the troupe will premiere Tuta, which is their version of Titus Andronicus.
The tickets can be purchased at a single price of €8 on www.auditoriodetenerife.com, at the auditorium's box office, or by dialling the phone number 902 317 327, from Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
