BETWEEN NORTH AND SOUTH
The Festival Internacional de Música Antigua de Tenerife (Fimante) and the Nova Ars Organorum (NAO) series present Entre el norte y el sur [Between North and South].
In a small, interesting instrument in this church in the village of La Victoria, in north Tenerife, we will have the chance to listen to a variety of German and Iberian compositions for the organ. The programme includes German composers, predecessors of the grandiose production of Johann Sebastian Bach, like Scheidemann or Buxtehude, two fundamental pieces by the Leipzig cantor and another one by his contemporary, Walther. Through them we can experience what organ music was like in the hands of these expert organists and composers from the mid and late Baroque in an instrument that has the timbres typical of the Germanic world.
In contrast, the second part leaves behind the complexities of counterpoints to exhibit the grace and elegance of the 18th century sonata, which has a lighter texture in Italian, Portuguese, or Spanish composers who are represented here by the famous Domenico Scarlatti and the less well-known Carlos Seixas and José Lidón. Two contrasting worlds brought together in a single evening as a sample of the linguistic wealth of European music from the 17th and 18th centuries.
