Ópera en minúscula (small-format opera)  presents at the Espacio La Granja an ongoing experiment in which eight artists come together to create and seek possibilities within the genre of opera, exploring the limits of each of its member’s performing skills. In this creative process, individuality and roles are blurred in favour of creativity, from vulnerability and affection to a search for commotion. An exercise in speleology which is the end in itself.

With a largely process-based approach, this group has worked on a laboratory process during an artistic residency, prioritising search and exploration and shunning the logic of an industry-imposed result. Another of the project’s drivers is the broadening of the scope of conventions from within the genre. La Plaza seeks to defy the operatic canon by breaking away from judgement, space and time.

The interpretation of this process is designed to be site-specific in order to emerge in and interact with public spaces. It is to be performed in unconventional locations, from squares to field houses. A defining characteristic of La Plaza is the group’s commitment to the support and promotion of emerging creators. It provides a crucial platform for artists to exhibit their work and to establish valuable connections in the sector.

La Plaza is a collective made up of María Alonso, Sebastian Brown, Aday Cartagena, Miguel Gutiérrez, Alicia Moreno, Cristina R. Cejas, Ruth Rubio and Daahoud Salim.
