The Package includes the following concerts: The Redemption of Man, in MarchFrom East to West, on 13 April and From Spain to Russia, on 18 May.

La redencion del hombre okThe Redemption of Man is conducted by Martín Baeza-Rubio, who has a versatile musical career which started as soloist trumpet, being guest performer in a huge number of orchestras. He then went on to carry out research in musicology and has collaborated in many ensembles. Baeza-Rubio has a firm commitment to contemporary creation, specifically Spanish. As conductor, he has led some sixty absolute premieres and is building up an excellent reputation. It is not a surprise he was willing to take charge of the absolute premiere of one of the best established Canaries composers, Dori Díaz Jerez. He is also presenting Symphony nº 5 by Prokófiev and the Five Last Lieder by Richard Strauss, which is perhaps the most celebrated group of orchestral songs. Composed at the end of his life, this fresco of deep beauty and wisdom needs the full, rich, though flexible, voice of a soprano. Jacqueline Wagner, an uprising vocalist, has the tools and sensitivity to turn this concert into an unforgettable event, after having reached the top at the Paris Opera and La Scala in Milan. A protégé of Seiji Ozawa and Leonard Bernstein, Japanese conductor Eiji Oue who has built his career in Japan, the United States and Spain, will be conducting Tenerife Symphony Orchestra. Covering a wide time scope, he will start with the Overture of the celebrated musical by Leonard Bernstein “West Side Story” to go on with Jean Sibelius’s Violin Concerto. Trained as a violinist, this is the only concerto by the Finnish composer. It requires a soloist of impeccable technique who avoids vain ostentation. It will be played by Korean-North American Sarah Chang -a child prodigy and a star today- who recorded it for Emi. The show is rounded off with Bohemian composer Dvořák and his Symphony nº 7, perhaps not as popular as his New World Symphony, but quite formidable in itself. (more info here)

Coming back this season, Daniel Raiskin suggests a musical journey with From Spain to Russia, starting off with La procesión del Rocío by Joaquín Turina, a brief symphonic poem first performed in 1913 and composed in Paris. It is structured in two movements which portray images and impressions of Easter in his native city of Seville. From Russia we welcome two of the major figures from last century: De Espana a Rusia okSergei Prókofief and his Violin Concerto nº 2, premiered in 1935 in Madrid, to be performed by the young Dutch soloist Simone Lamsma. The show ends with Dmitri Shostakovich and his Symphony nº 5, a composition with which he tried to win over the Soviet cultural authorities by using a more moderate language, adding that it was “a composer’s response to justified criticism” (more info here).
