The identification between national popular music and gipsy music was quite frequent in Hungary in the 19th century, as for instance in the music of great composers like Franz Liszt. It was only in the early 20th century when the ethnic-musical studies carried out by Béla Bartók, among others, differentiated both musical realities, leading Hungarian musicians to reassess the relationship between both musical backgrounds. This programme pays homage to zíngara or Gipsy-Hungarian music with a selection of representative pieces of the use some composers made of this fertile musical tradition.
