This Spanish and Italian opera coproduction starring Yolanda Auyanet will be on at the Auditorio de Tenerife on 24, 26 and 28

Auditorio de Tenerife, a cultural venue under the Cabildo de Tenerife’s Department of Culture run by councillor Enrique Arriaga, will start selling the tickets for the three performances of Lucrezia Borgia tomorrow, Thursday the 5th. The opera will be performed on 24th, 26th and 28th November at the Sala Sinfónica at 7:00 pm, half an hour earlier than usual. This eagerly anticipated Ópera de Tenerife’s premiere had to be cancelled last March due to the health crisis. It is now back with all the safety measures in place both for the audience and the artists.

This production of Gaetano Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia is a coproduction of Ópera de Tenerife with Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Ópera de Oviedo and Teatro de la Maestranza de Sevilla. The main role will be performed by Canarian soprano Yolanda Auyanet, who leads the cast along with Antonino Siragusa, Simone Alberghini and Na’ama Goldman, among other singers. Ópera de Tenerife’s Choir will play a special role in this staging, which is going to make Auditorio’s Sala Sinfónica shine again with the stage design, the orchestra, and the voices.

In her fourth title with Ópera de Tenerife, Silvia Paoli is the stage director and takes the story to Mussolini’s fascist Italy to underline the feeling of oppression and claustrophobia the story suggests, specifically setting it in a slaughterhouse. The Sinfónica de Tenerife will be conducted by Andriy Yurkevych, musical director at the Teatr Wielki Opera Norodowa (Polish National Opera), one of the most sought-after conductors internationally.

Lucrezia Borgia is a melodrama in a prologue and two acts with music by Gaetano Donizetti and libretto by Felice Romani based on Victor Hugo’s drama and freely inspired by the historical figure of Lucrezia Borgia. It was performed for the first time at Teatro alla Scala in Milan on 26 December 1833.

The composer looks deeply into the morbid legend of Pope Alessandro VI’s daughter who grew up in a family surrounded by rumours of incest, adultery, infidelity, betrayal, murder and horror, creating a strong psychological portrait of a powerful but fragile woman.
